Open burning restrictions to be lifted in North Island, Sunshine Coast Friday

The B.C. Wildfire Service is easing open-burning restrictions in several areas of the Coastal Fire Centre.

As of noon Friday, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will be allowed again in the North Island Mid Coast and Sunshine Coast fire zones.

That includes the Campbell River, North Island Central Coast and Sunshine Coast forest districts.

The restrictions remain in place in the Mid Island and South Island fire zones, as well as the Pemberton and Fraser fire zones.

“Practicing fire safety and preparedness remains important all year long,” said the B.C. Wildfire Service. “Be aware of your local conditions and ensure that burning is done in a safe and responsible manner, and always check with your local government before engaging in any activity that could spark a wildfire.”

The move follows the lifting of the Category 1 campfire prohibition throughout the Coastal Fire Centre on Sept. 3.

Backyard and industrial burning, burn barrels and cages, fireworks and binary exploding targets remain prohibited in areas where Category 2 and Category 3 open fires are restricted.
