qathet Regional District wins two workplace safety awards

The qathet Regional District has received two provincial awards recognizing its workplace health and safety efforts.

The awards were presented Oct. 6 at a joint conference of the B.C. Municipal Safety Association and the Public Works Association of B.C. in Penticton.

The regional district received the Organizational Safety Excellence Award for its efforts to prevent workplace injuries and help employees return to work after an injury.

Staff at the Resource Recovery Centre received the Innovative Safety Solution Award for improving air quality in the facility’s scale house.

Staff used real-time air quality monitoring to identify vehicle exhaust and other contaminants, then adjusted the existing ventilation system and installed a custom window insert. The changes improved air quality without requiring replacement of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

“These awards reflect the commitment our employees bring to creating safe and healthy workplaces across the qRD,” said qRD Chief Administrative Officer Al Radke. “Achieving strong safety results takes sustained effort across the organization, from identifying hazards and preventing injuries to supporting employees when injuries do occur. We’re proud to see that work recognized, and especially pleased that our approach is delivering benefits for both our employees and the organization.”
