City of Powell River restricts access to South Harbour decks

The City of Powell River is restricting public access to the South Harbour decks after a structural assessment found them unsafe.

“The physical condition of the harbour decks pose potential hazards, and safety remains the City’s top priority,” reads a statement from the city. “As a result, concrete physical barriers and warning signage have been installed to prevent public access to the affected areas.”

Access is limited to boat owners who need to reach their vessels, the city said.

The city said the decks’ load-carrying capacity and the rate of structural deterioration are unknown.

“The City is committed to making constructive improvements and repairing South Harbour to restore safe, long-term accessibility,” the city said.

The restrictions will remain in place until repairs are completed or the structure is decommissioned, the city said.
