A local forestry group has 2 scholarships available for students in the region.
Powell River Community Forest offers $2500 scholarships to people studying something to do with forestry every year.
Spokesperson Janet May says one of the groups main goals is to give back to the community.
“We have a forest license from the BC Government, and that enables us to log some of the land around our community. It’s around the watershed, too, so we’re [very] careful not to cause any water problems.”
She adds that one of their prime goals is to “maintain water quality and sustainability of the forest.”
She says the revenue from logging goes back into the community, mainly in the form of grants and scholarships. The deadline for the 2017 scholarship applications is June 2nd.
