Controversy over coal barging continues

The environmental group Voters Taking Action on Climate Change is in court this week…WEBSITE

They’re challenging the Ministry of Mines decision to greenlight an expansion at the coal port on Texada Island. It’s part of a plan that would see US Thermal coal barged through Georgia Strait on it’s way to Asian markets.

VTA-CC Director Kevin Washbrook says the approval process was flawed.

Washbrook says the proposal would see 4 million tonnes of coal handled within the first two years, and he says there needs to be much more oversight by the Ministry of the Environment.
