Deer Conflict Calls Up 50% Over 2016

Encounters with wildlife continue to be a problem in the region. Local Conservation Officers have had to euthanize 6 deer in the last month.

However, Francine Ulmer with the Powell River branch of WildSafe BC says this isn’t just a problem in the region, but also all across British Columbia.

“Right now across BC, the CO Service is receiving increased numbers of calls on deer. This year, calls to the CO Service are up 50% reporting deer conflict over last year.”

Ulmer advises residents to make sure their garbage is put away properly so wild animals are not tempted to wander into residential areas.

She says that if you have a conflict with wildlife, get in touch with Conservation Officers immediately.

WildSafe BC is holding an event on Thursday, October 12th. Provincial Coordinator Frank Ritcey will be in attendance, along with Mike Badry from the Ministry of Environment.

That event goes at the Powell River United Church. More details can be found through the event’s Facebook page at facebook.com/events.
