A grizzly bear has been sighted around Powell River for the past week, most recently near Lang Creek, and residents are asked to be careful.
According to the qathet Regional District, the bear has not caused any conflicts, is not acting aggressively, and seems to be foraging for natural foods. It was most recently sighted at the Powell River salmon hatchery on Wednesday morning.
The BC Conservation Officer Service says it’s the same bear first spotted near Roberts Road on September 20, and seen several times since. They say it’s likely using salmon in Lang Creek as a food source, and they recommend residents to avoid the area and the trails at the salmon hatchery for the time being.
They say the coastal grizzly population is fragile, and that sightings are rare but not unheard of around Powell River.
