Salmon stamp money helps protect Lang Creek

Salmon stewards are tracking fish populations in the Lang Creek Watershed, thanks to a grant from the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

The Powell River Salmon Society recently received more than $10,000 from the foundation. The society tracks environmental conditions in the watershed, which covers around 1,200 hectares east of Powell River.

The funding will pay for new mobile monitoring devices and gear to track the effects of climate change and incidents such as landslides, log jams, or runoff pollution.

Philip Nakatsu, the society’s assistant manager, says the grant will help community members and local agencies do continuous water quality sampling to make sure the creek stays healthy for salmon.

The funding comes from money collected each year through the salmon stamp anglers can purchase with their fishing licences.
