Car crashes into tree off Highway 101

POWELL RIVER, B.C.- A car swept through one lane of traffic before hitting a tree off of Highway 101 on Tuesday evening.

Powell River Fire’s Deputy Chief, Rocky Swanson, said they responded to the scene around 8:00 p.m. near the Beach Gardens.

“The northbound vehicle, single occupant, went off the west side of the road through one lane of traffic and crossed over into a ditch,” he explained.

“It stopped by hitting a large tree, and very luckily, the airbag deployed and the (driver) was able to walk away.” Swanson said no serious injuries were reported.

The individual was taken to local hospital by Emergency Health Services (EHS).

Swanson noted that three firefighters attended the scene, along with two RCMP officers and EHS.

As for the cause, he said the “RCMP are investigating that right now.”

Swanson noted that there was some traffic disruption for a short period of time.

“Although, traffic was able to get around through some of the back streets quiet easily,” said Swanson.

“We had to periodically shut the traffic down for about a one and a half hour period as the vehicle was extracted from the ditch. There was some minor disruptions, but nothing for a long period of time.”

Swanson said the vehicle involved was extensively damaged on the front end.
