Funding approved for new evacuation support cubes

POWELL RIVER, BC- The Powell River Regional District (PRRD) is beefing up its emergency preparedness.

The PRRD has announced that a grant application to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) was successful. The funding will go towards evacuation support equipment.

In a release, the PRRD said that the Regional Emergency Planning Service worked with staff at the Tla’amin Nation and City of Powell River to figure out potential locations for new emergency evacuation containers. The containers will hold basic evacuation gear, such as blankets, first aid kits and water purification equipment.

Proposed locations are the Salish Centre in Tla’amin Nation, the Powell River Recreation Complex in the City of Powell River, and the Texada Island Community Hall in Gillies Bay.

The release stated that the containers will improve evacuation response by providing needed supplies throughout the PRRD. The equipment is part of on-going regional evacuation planning.
