Know your burning bylaws
With spring approaching and the beginning of April only a couple of weeks away, residents in Powell River will soon be able to burn legally.
But more and more residents have noticed rusty and burnt nails along Hulks Beach – leading to concerns of illegal burning in the area.
Powell River Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Terry Peters says you can only burn in April and in November – and only if you have a permit.
He says if you burn outside those restricted times, you are burning illegally. He notes you have to adhere to bylaws or you will be subject to fines.
Fines can reach up to $2,000. Anyone found responsible for causing a wildfire can be liable to pay for the entire cost of extinguishing it.
