New tool available to treat an overdose

The North Island Medical Health Officer says medication to reverse opioid overdoses is being made more widely-available.

Doctor Charmaine Enns says the Federal Government is allowing Naloxone will be available at pharmacies as an over-the-counter medication.

Last week, the provincial health officer declared a public health emergency due to the dramatic rise in drug overdose deaths in BC.

Enns says while Naloxone will not cure all overdoses, increased availability may help to reduce the number of deaths due to opioid overdoses.
