Local Powell River school gets federal support in switching to electric bus

The bus taking you to school may change, with the Government of Canada investing towards an electric school bus project in Powell River.

The government is investing a total of $19,360 to support the Assumption School’s conversion to using an electric school bus, with the goal of producing a blueprint for a greener and healthier transit for students.

Not only would the project review how feasible the conversion would be, but there will also be a focus on implementing vehicle-charging infrastructure, and putting together a strategy for the school to claim the bus.

School president Lisa Berg says this grant helps in their goal to reduce the school’s carbon footprint.

“Switching to an electric bus will allow us to create a healthier community and to care for the earth in the way the people of the Tla’amin Nation have done for time immemorial,” says Berg.

The investment comes as part of Canada’s ongoing plan of reducing emissions to net-zero by 2050.
