qathet Regional District approves 4-year strategic plan

The qathet Regional District says its four-year strategic plan is focused on social, economic, cultural, and environmental pillars.

The 2023-2027 plan was approved on Wednesday, and they add its foundation is on quality of life in the area and priorities include organizational excellence, environment and climate and community connections.

They add it provides a unified mission, vision and clear priorities for the district and staff will work with high-level timelines and performance measures for each strategic initiative.

According to the plan areas of focus include:

  • Basing decisions off facts and balancing needs of the region with its uniqueness
  • A focus on two-way communication between residents and the district
  • Conserving the natural environment and preserving parks infrastructure
  • Funding and supporting active transportation and honouring and respecting First Nations and the land they operate on
  • Diverse housing throughout the region and supporting rural areas in water governance

The plan adds they will advocate for housing policies to support sustainable densification and affordability, create responsive transit schedules, restored BC Ferries service levels and enhanced cycling connectivity among others.

“The strategic plan unifies our team in our regional priorities and ensures that directors, staff and key actors can work together effectively to achieve common goals that benefit the region we serve,” said regional board chair Clay Brander.

“I would like to thank everyone who participated in our strategic planning process for their valuable and thoughtful contributions, all of which laid the groundwork for the holistic plan.”

The strategic plan will run beyond the present board term, which the district says will allow staff to continue working on multi-year initiatives while also assisting the future board in establishing a strategic direction.

The priorities have also been included in the annual budgeting process.
