Public invited to annual shoe memorial Wednesday

The Powell River RCMP Victim Services and qathet Safety and Advocacy for Everyone (SAFE) are inviting residents to the 12th annual shoe memorial tomorrow (Wednesday).

It will be held in the Town Centre mall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it marks the Nation Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, commemorating the 14 women who were murdered at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique in 1989.

Attached to each pair of shoes is a short biography of a woman or child who died due to violence or is missing due to suspicious circumstances.

Police add victim services’ Christine Schreiber will be there with PADS Justice facility dog Serrano and members of qathet SAFE.

“It is an important opportunity to increase awareness about gender-based violence and to highlight the support services that are available in Powell River,” said Schreiber.

All community members are invited to come by and take a moment to visit and honour the memorial display.
