Council approves creation of ‘situation table’ to improve downtown

The city is setting up a multi-agency group to tackle health and social issues affecting community well-being.

This week council moved ahead with setting up a Situation Table, funded by $70,000 in provincial money. The group will bring together different aid, government, and law enforcement agencies.

Situation Tables are intended to coordinate efforts to better identify people at-risk, better meet their needs, and reduce demand on police and emergency resources.

Councillor George Doubt is looking forward to the new group, along with the rest of council.

“It will be great to take advantage of that, to get all of these different agencies in the city, that are all trying to do their best but are not coordinating their actions, to try to get it all together and see if we can make a difference to everybody’s life,” he said.

Local RCMP are supportive, as mental health and wellness calls continue to increase. RCMP will lead the table for now, until a permanent lead agency is chosen to manage it.
