Doctors upset over lack of beds at long-term care facilities

There’s a shortage of beds at long-term care facilities on the Sunshine Coast, and doctors are not happy about it.

Doctor Jim Petzold says over 50 regional physicians have signed a letter to the Ministry of Health in support of obtaining more beds at local care facilities.

Petzold notes Vancouver Coastal Health has announced the creation of a new facility that will include 20 new long-term care beds, far short of what is required. He says they would need over 140 beds to meet the Coastal average.

Petzold says he’s met with a VCH representative and that they understand the need for more beds, but there just isn’t enough money for additional beds.
