Feds approve Trans Mountain, Line 3 pipelines and reject Northern Gateway

The Federal Government has approved two of three proposed pipeline projects.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain expansion and the Line – 3 replacement projects will go ahead, while the Northern Gateway Pipeline project will not.

Both of the approved projects will need to meet or exceed binding conditions set out by the National Energy Board. The Trans Mountain expansion project will almost triple the capacity of an existing pipeline to 890,000 barrels a day.

Trudeau also announced a ban on crude oil tanker traffic for British Columbia’s North Coast.
