Latest drought report shows drying conditions for Sunshine Coast

The BC Government has published its latest Drought and Water Scarcity Bulletin, with data reaching up to August 20.

Locally, East Vancouver Island, from Campbell River through Victoria, is rated at level 2 on its drought severity index, with level 5 being the most severe.

The Sunshine Coast is at Level 2 this week after being at Level 1 last week, West Vancouver Island, from Port Hardy to Port Refrew, remains at 0.

The report notes high water scarcity levels in the Chemainus and Koksilah Rivers in the Cowichan Valley, with both waterways experiencing low streamflows, elevated water temperatures and reduced fish habitat.

Stage 3 and 4 watering restrictions remain active in many Vancouver Island communities.

Forecasters said thunderstorms and rain could make its way into the province this weekend.

“A cooler weather pattern with showers and a risk of thunderstorms is expected to arrive over the weekend,” said the report. “Where rainfall occurs, forecast amounts are generally expected to be light, with heavier totals possible in localized areas affected by thunderstorms.”

The report said as long-term drought conditions continue across many parts of southern B.C., recovery from drought next year may require wetter-than-normal conditions and a late freshet.
