Bus security camera installation begins in Powell River

POWELL RIVER, B.C.- Closed-circuit television cameras are being added to four BC Transit buses in Powell River.

According to a BC Transit release, all medium and heavy-duty buses that were acquired after 2005 will have the cameras installed.

New buses, which are 27 feet and longer, will be delivered to the region with the cameras already installed. To date, over 400 buses in the BC Transit network have had security cameras installed, showing positive results.

The estimated budget to equip the four buses with the new technology is $19,000.

The installation is funded by the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund, which is contributing $160 million to projects across British Columbia.

BC Transit’s Communications Manager, Jonathon Dyck, said there are five buses in the Powell River fleet, but one bus does not meet the criteria for closed-circuit television camera installation.
