All ‘high-risk’ activities prohibited on Savary Island due to fire concerns

With fire risks high, the qathet Regional District says all “high-risk activities” are banned on Savary Island.

The ban was put into effect by the the island’s fire chief on Friday. Under the ban, mechanical brushing, using fire or spark-producing tools, fireworks, mechanical land clearing and rock drilling are not allowed along with many other activities.

This comes in addition to the prohibition on all open burning activities, and fire chief Chris Philpott adds it is “crucial to keeping Savary Island residents and visitors safe given the current extremely warm and dry conditions.”

The prohibitions will be in place until further notice.
