Qathet Regional District approves five-year budget

The qathet Regional District says they have adopted the five-year financial plan which will total over $29 million.

The district says the budget includes a net operating budget of $15.6 million, $8.5 million in capital spending, and total debt payments and transfers of reserves of $3.5 million.

Spending will go towards several projects scheduled for 2024 including continuation of the Savary Island groundwater study, accessibility audit and improvements, replacement of the roof on both the Powell River Cemetery mausoleum and office.

Board chair Clay Bender says setting aside funds for the district is fundamental for maintaining services now and for the future.

“Cutting the budget to the bare minimum today just places the burden on future generations,” he says. “Inflation and the lingering effects of COVID-19 on supply chains have driven prices up, but we credit staff for their fiscal restraint.”

The district says they’ve also applied to obtain an additional five million dollars in funding to help assist with projects planned this year.

The qathet Regional District provides 46 services to the residents of the region, which include five electoral areas and the City of Powell River.
