Three dead, two hospitalized after clam fishing boat capsizes near Savary Island

A clam fishing boat capsized late Thursday night near Savary Island, leaving three people dead.

Powell River RCMP received a report on May 21 around 11 p.m. that a vessel had capsized 500 to 1,000 metres off Savary Island.

Two men were reported to have made it to shore, while three others remained missing.

At about 10 p.m., the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre was alerted after the vessel failed to return to Lund Harbour as expected.

Search and rescue resources were deployed, including a Powell River Coast Guard lifeboat, an inshore fast rescue craft from Cortes Bay and a Kingfisher aircraft from 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron based in Comox.

RCMP, in coordination with Savary Island Fire, conducted shoreline searches and located the three missing men deceased.

The two survivors were transported back to Powell River, where they were assessed and taken to hospital by Emergency Health Services.

Powell River RCMP said they are assisting the BC Coroners Service with the investigation.
